Hiking past glaciers, volcanoes, and ice caves through the Icelandic Highlands and relaxing in hot springs under the midnight sun- this is the type of incredible natural experience many people want in Iceland, but that few actually experience.

The Laugavegur Hike

This is Iceland's most popular hike, and for good reason. The scenery is spectacular, and every day brings a different type of natural beauty. This trail was even listed by National Geographic as one of 20 trips on their Ultimate Adventure Bucket List. We start out at Landmannalaugar, known for the beautiful colors in the surrounding mountains. For many, the highlight of this area is the natural geothermal hot spring which is perfect for a soak after a day of hiking. While on the trek, we will hike past steam vents, glaciers, and volcanoes. The hike has an overall loss of elevation, and is perfect for experienced and first time backpackers. Every night we camp in designated camp sites with running water, toilets, and even showers at some of the locations. For an added treat, you can opt to stay in a hut several nights.

TRIP DIFFICULTY: Challenging

This is the most physically demanding trip that we offer. Prior hiking experience is recommended. The elevation is not high, but the weather can change quickly and you have to be prepared for a variety of weather conditions. The most you walk in a day is 10 miles, and although you have many hours to do it, you will be carrying your clothes with you in a hiker's backpack. You have to be mentally and physically prepared for the challenge, but the views you get on this trek, views that only hikers see, are definitely worth it. People without prior hiking experience have done the trip before, and if absolutely needed you can leave the hike and return to the city from one of the huts along the way, but obviously we want everyone to enjoy the trip and finish the hike! Our leaders have Wilderness First Responder certifications to provide aid if needed, and will give plenty of encouragement and advice to help you complete the trek.

Our trip design

Chances are you will not be in this area again, so why not make the most of it? That is why we choose to spend more time on our trip than many other tour companies. We spend two nights at Landmannalaugar, giving you time to truly appreciate the beauty of the colored mountains. While here, we do shorter hikes to get acclimated to hiking so that you will be better prepared for the longer trek. Furthermore, we stay here longer so that you will have an opportunity to enjoy the hot spring in the evening. Soaking in geothermal springs under the midnight sun in the remote highlands of Iceland? That is the type of incredible natural experience that draws people to Iceland, and yet the majority of tourists do not even visit here, and many of those that do just pass through. Our smaller groups add to the camaraderie that you experience with the other hikers and allows our leaders to give you more individual attention. With all of these benefits, you will be glad you chose to travel with a company committed to providing an unforgettable experience and not just a trip.
