Day 1: Welcome to Lauterbrunnen! Grüezi! Our trip begins in the charming town of Lauterbrunnen, home to 72 cascading waterfalls, towering cliffs, and beautiful alpine meadows. In 1911, J.R.R. Tolkien visited this same area and was so inspired by the valley that he later created Rivendell, magical home to the elves, in its image. We spend the afternoon hiking at the base of the infamous Eiger mountain or through a gorgeous valley surrounded by waterfalls before returning for a decadent Swiss dinner by moonlight in view of the magnificent Staubbach Falls.
Day 2: Hike to Obersteinberg (~7 miles). Today we trek through the meadows of the valley, in the shadows of paragliders with waterfalls cascading overhead. As we ascend through the forest, you will enjoy astonishing views of the Breithorn and a number of surrounding glaciers. We climb 2850 feet today, finishing with a well-deserved drink at cozy Obersteinberg, a working dairy farm (you can sample their scrumptious cheese!) and beautifully restored berghotel. Nestled in a cradle of mountains at 5,833 feet, we have a good chance to spot some of the chamois, ibex, and red deer that roam the high mountains.
Day 3: Hike to Mürren (~7 miles). We begin the day with an invigorating sunrise hike to Oberhornsee, a secluded alpine lake at 6,770 feet- the perfect spot for a morning dip! You have two hiking options today. For more relaxation, you can descend to the valley and take a gondola to Gimmelwald (leaving plenty of time for a leisurely walk up to Mürren where there is shopping and a spa available to you). For the adventuresome, we curve around the mountain and ascend Tanzbodeli (literally meaning ‘dancing floor’) for jaw-dropping panoramic views before descending to Gimmelwald on foot and ending the day at a magnificent 100-year-old grand Swiss hotel.
Day 4: Hike to Sefinenfurgee Pass (~10 miles). We have a glorious day of hiking ahead of us today! We start out from Mürren, meandering through alpine pastures with the famous Swiss cow bells chiming as we walk. Lunch will be at the charming Rockstockhütte, before our ascent over the second highest pass of the valley, Sefinenfurgge Pass, at 8,570 feet. From the top of the pass, you will enjoy breath-taking views of an entirely new range of mountains. After about 10 miles of walking and over 3,000 feet of climbing, you will enjoy sitting down to a home-cooked meal at a comfortable and secluded berghaus.
Day 5: Hike to Hortürli Pass and Oeschinensee Lake (~6 miles). The grand crescendo of our hiking journey, today we cross the highest pass of the valley! We climb over 3,500 feet to reach the mighty Hortürli Pass (meaning ‘little door’) which opens to unforgettable views of the Blüemlisalp Glacier and surrounding mountains. At 9,114 feet, this marks our highest elevation of the trip, so why not climb 183 feet higher to celebrate with fruit tartes at the Blüemlisalphütte? We descend to sleep next to Oeschinensee, perhaps the most beautiful lake in all of Switzerland.
Day 6: Farewell from Kandersteg (~2 miles). We begin the day with a leisurely walk down from the lake to Kandersteg. Set among the mountains, surrounded by meadows, this is a true hiker’s nirvana and the perfect setting to end our journey. Auf wiedersehen!
